5 Things I've Learned

Some things I've learned about Iowa and/ or Cedar Falls:

1) For many folks, faith/ religion is a very public part of their lives (coming from someone who moved from "secular" Madison, WI)
2) While the climate is the same as Madison, it is noticeably susceptible to hot prairie winds
3) RAGBRAI is a big deal.
4) Having only 3 public universities makes for strong allegiances.
5) Both public education and public radio are strongly supported.

3 and 5 should be welcome! 4 should be interesting, as should 1. Is 1 in a typical midwest way, or more southern bible belt? As for 2, I saw the words hot winds and cringed. :-)

There's a mix of typical midwestern and southern Bible-beltish religion around. CF has no lack of progressive religious institutions, as Iowa does in general. Anabaptists, especially Quakers and Mennonites have a history in the area.

But why did you cringe at hot prairie winds. K8? Remind you too much of your home? :)

I don't deal well with high temperatures. I had heat exhaustion once when I was 15, and ever since I seem to be more sensitive to hot weather. It could, of course, just be my imagination, but I find hot weather oppressive.

Not always theoretical... not even always academic.. but always written..
